If you’re a parent to a furry friend, it’s time to gear up! From January 10, 2026, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will officially roll out new pet regulations. These include mandatory microchipping and limits on the number of pets per household.

🐶 When should you microchip your pet?

Pet parents must microchip their pet within 120 days of its birth, or within 30 days of acquiring it in Bangkok. Registration is also required. Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to 25,000 baht.

📏 Pet limits based on living space

For houses/land:

≤ 20 sq wah (~80 sqm): max 2 pets
≤ 50 sq wah (~200 sqm): max 3 pets
≤ 100 sq wah (~400 sqm): max 4 pets
100 sq wah: max 6 pets

For condos/apartments:

20–80 sqm: 1 pet
Larger than 80 sqm: 2 pets

🚶‍♂️ How to walk or take pets out legally

Whenever outside, pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. For “dangerous breeds” like Pit Bulls or Rottweilers:

Must be muzzled
Leash no longer than 50 cm
Handler must be between ages 10–65

🐾 Why this new law?

To reduce the stray animal population, prevent disease transmission, and promote responsible pet parenting. Microchipping will also help reunite lost pets with their pawrents.
